Car Manufacturing Grows in February: According to a new report out today, the number of cars built in the UK in February 2016 increased by more than 13% compared to the same month in 2015. The automotive sector is a key industry for us at JS Burgess Engineering and we are pleased to hear this excellent news about growth – congratulations to everyone involved in the sector!
The figures come from The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), and suggest that 146,955 cars were built in February, about 17,000 more than in the same period last year.
The increase took the total number of cars built in the UK this year to almost 300,000 (284,507) – representing an increase of more than 10% from the same point a year ago.
Further figures suggest the UK exported 104,880 cars, as well as confirming that almost half as many again, 42,075, were also sold into the UK market month.
Mike Hawes, chief executive of the SMMT, said: “The UK automotive industry’s impressive growth continued into February, with demand from both domestic and overseas customers showing no signs of slowing.
“The outlook for the sector is bright, but much will depend on global political and economic conditions in the months and years to come.”
These figures, and their increase compared to 2015, show the continued improvement of the UK car manufacturing sector’s fortunes. Across the whole of last year, almost 1.6 million cars were built in the UK, up 3.9% on 2014.
Industry analysts predict car output to reach record levels of around two million units by 2017, overtaking the 1972 record of 1.92 million.
