Stillages are used in a huge variety of envirnoments from construction sites to lean manufacturing installations. Each of these environments provides its own challenges and requires materials to suit the conditions. Whilst many stillages and cages have an open base such as the ones shown in the image below, there are a variety of other options available to customers.
Wood & Manufactured Board Base Stillages
Provided they are supported correctly, woods and manufactured boards are enormously strong in compression and have the added advantage of being soft which reduces the chances of marking or damaging products.
J S Burgess uses a number of different wood products in their designs, all chosen carefully by the design team to deliver the best possible product to the customer.
Mesh Faced Birch Core Ply Base Stillages
This is the same high quality material used in wagon flooring. Though more expensive than a standard Ply or OSB, It is water reisitant, anti-slip and does not delaminate over time. This material is used by several of our high profile customers who understand that the additional upfront cost can save downtime, maintenance and hassle in the long run.
Standard or Marine Ply Base Stillages
Standard ply is a very strong material which is available in a variety of thicknesses. Though not as tuff as the “Buffalo Board” described above, it is more inexpensive and suitable for a wide range of applications. Standard ply is able to accept stain and painted finishes and has good resistance to wet weather though prolonged exposure to these condiditons will cause delamination.
“Planed All Round” supports are often used on glass handling A-Frames. Provided that they are loaded and strapped correctly, glass products are able to rest against these supports without concern of damage. You can clearly see thse in the image above and the 3D CAD render below.
OSB Base Stillages
“Oriented Strand Board” or OSB is commonly used in the construction industry and is a combination of “flaked” timber bonded together by resin adhesives. It is a strong waterproof material but is succeptable to impact or gouging damage as shown in the image below (right).
Mesh Base Stillages
Mesh bases provide a hard wearing flooring solutions that allows drainage and reduces the weight of stillages. Though we can offer a traditional wire mesh, this is more often used in the sides of stillages & bins to retain products.
A more hard wearing and durable option for flooring is “ExMesh“. Exmesh is provided in 3mm thickness and a variety of mesh spacings. This material is often used in large automotive stillages where operatives are required to stand inside the stillage to retreive products. In addition to its weight saving and durable properties, it also provides an excellent slip resistant surface should employees be required to stand within the stillage.
Sheet Metal Base Stillages & Bins
Sheet metal bases are generally provided in either 2mm or 3mm plain carbon steel. They do not allow drainage which can be an advantage for customers who wish to handle granular materials or other items which cannot be allowed to “leak out” from the container.
The above design shows a large collapsible skip with sheet metal flooring. In this instance the customer chose a sheet metal base rather than mesh as the product is used to handle broken glass which cannot be allowed to spill out of the stillage.
Sheet metal also has the advantage of adding considerable stiffness to the stillage which can increase rigidity and load handling capability.
