JS Burgess began its journey in 1990 delivering Stillages for the Aluminium and UPVC Extrusion industry when the owner at the time Jim Burgess saw the need for a quality Stillage manufacturer. In 2004 husband and wife team Jonathan and Thea Patoff purchased the business and through continuous investment and staff development have grown JS Burgess Engineering into what is now the largest Stillage manufacturer in the UK.
With an experienced management team and staff we now manufacture and supply many tens of thousands of stillages each year to a wide number of industry sectors. Coupled with years of industry experience our talented in-house technical design team are able to design and manufacture Stillages to meet our customers every requirement. We also have the capacity to schedule production runs for larger more complex projects with tight deadlines for which we offer ongoing support, project management and real-time delivery reporting to guarantee an efficient and satisfying service
More recently in addition to manufacturing Stillages, A-frames, Bins and Baskets we have invested in infrastructure, technology and staffing and have successfully expanded into the manufacturer of Skips and RoRo Containers. JS Burgess Engineering makes tens of thousands of Stillages and other associated products each year. As one of the UK’s leading Stillage design and manufacturing firms we have an unrivalled wealth of industry knowledge in designing and engineering Stillages, Glass Handling equipment and Waste related products such as Bins, Skips and Containers.
All production is carried out in our 7-acre Whaley Bridge factory in the High Peaks. We are proud to be part of Derbyshire’s manufacturing and engineering prowess and employ over 50 personnel including welders, shop-floor operatives and office based staff covering Operations, Engineering, Design, Transport & Logistics and Customer Service.

We have the internal capacity and expertise to manufacture, manage and schedule large orders into production at very tight deadlines. Our welding set up with Jigs and Fixtures enables us to make industrial quality products at scale whilst maximising efficiency, maintaining consistency and ensuring dimensional accuracy. It also helps us to reduce the overall cost of our production which in turn allows us to offer competitive pricing to all of our customers.
Utilising our in-house drawing and technical design facilities we are able to offer a fully comprehensive CAD design service enabling us to design and manufacture bespoke products to meet our customers exact requirements. Our experienced technical team work closely with our customers taking into account existing product specifications, project requirements, product sizes, safe working loads, logistical problems or restraints, storage space and transportation etc.
Our in-house designers produce technical drawings to make sure that our guaranteed service levels are adhered to. We use both AutoCAD and Solidworks software for 3D design and are able to take into account things like motion simulation and stress analysis, input loads to run dynamic simulations and test how the product would function in real life.
We offer good old fashioned customer service using tried and tested processes and systems, proving that efficiency and service can come with a face and a name, building relationships upon trust. We may not always be the cheapest but we are best-in-class.

Our team has enormous logistical experience in arranging transport and making sure that our products are delivered to customers on time and as specified. We handle and transport tens of thousands of steel products each year with deliveries going all over the UK & Ireland as well as Europe. We use a variety of well regarded local and national carriers to deliver our range of products on time or alternatively can work with your logistics department to transport products using your own vehicles.
We advise customers as to which type of trailer will maximise transport capacity and lower overall costs. For example, with Stillages we often use stepped flat bed or step-deck trailers to gain additional height which means that more stillages can be loaded onto the wagon.
Our skilled FLT operatives have years of experience loading vehicles which means that products are protected when loaded and strapped down onto the vehicle.
For existing Customers, JS Burgess is able to offer a comprehensive Stillage repair and refurbishment service.
Working closely with Warehouse and Transport Managers and H&S personnel we are able to help our Customers keep stillage downtime to an absolute minimum and return as many damaged and bent ones back into their fleet as quickly and as cost effectively as possible.
In addition to the obvious and important H&S reasons there are masses of cost saving reasons why a company needs to maintain a healthy stillage fleet; for example, broken or bent stillages which can’t be used often require decanting which is costly. There is also a high cost in transporting damaged stillages which take up more space than their healthy counterparts.
